What is Stoalert?

It's an automated Stoa USA tournament watchdog system. Stoalert repeatedly checks the Stoa website and notifies you via email as soon as there is a change in tournament information, such as registration date or location. Interested? Sign up for Stoalert.

Stoalert is the easiest and simplest way to stay informed about upcoming tournaments.

A computer keeps an eye on public tournament information so that you don't have to. It automatically checks every 15 minutes, so you'll know about any changes immediately. If you're interested, there are more technical details below.

The best part about Stoalert? It's completely free. Stoalert is not about making money, it's about providing a service to the speech and debate community.

How it works

Stoalert is made from a precise proprietary brew that includes cooked pineapple, raw determination, and the left eyebrow of last year's national LD champion.

...Just kidding. Here's what's really happening under the hood:

The Stoa USA website has the most up-to-date information on nearly all Stoa tournaments. Crucial information such as the tournament date, which events are open at which tournament, and tournament registration dates are stored using a series of Google Calendars.

Stoalert is a small program that runs automatically on a server every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day. It reads all of Stoa USA's calendars and checks to see if there have been any changes since the last time it checked. If there are, it immediately notifies everyone who has subscribed by sending them a short email.

If you are of a technical bent, you may be interested to know that Stoalert is created with 100% PHP and MySQL. The program runs all hours of the day on a web server by making use of cron jobs.
